Building Energy Modeling (BEM)
BEM is a versatile, multipurpose tool for retrofit or new building design, green certification, code compliance, and qualification for tax credits and utility incentives building control. BEM is used in large-scale analyses to develop building energy efficiency codes and inform policy decisions. HES also offers ResCheck and ComCheck modeling capabilities. Most HES experience is within the multifamily sector along with hospitals, retail remodels, multi-use building renovations, and new construction projects. HES has performed 200+ models since the company’s inception. HES is also a proud participant of Austin Energy Green Building (AEGB). HES is a qualified energy consultant for Austin Energy Integrative Modeling Incentive (IMI) and the NJ Clean Energy Program as well as a Pay for Performance partner for the Board of Public Utilities. HES is also an approved trade ally for Focus on Energy in Wisconsin and Energy Trust of Oregon.
Renewable Energy Consulting
With the rising energy costs in the United States, renewable energy applications, such as solar, wind, and biomass technologies, are the driving market to the commercial, industrial, and residential industries. Utility and State incentives, combined with the federal government’s renewable energy tax credits, make photovoltaic (PV) installations a viable alternative to creating electricity in most states.
HES’ energy professionals have fifteen years and over 1 TW of experience with renewable energy projects throughout the country. In addition, HES’ certified energy managers offer the following renewable energy consulting services:
• Develop renewable energy feasibility studies
• Prepare RFQs or RFPs for implementing renewable energy systems
• Prepare RFQs or RFPs for Power Purchase Agreements for renewable energy systems
• Review proposals and make recommendations for energy providers who can effectively implement appropriate renewable energy strategies
• Monitor renewable energy systems on an ongoing basis

Energy Audits
HES provides energy efficiency audit services for various building types and industries. HES staff members are experienced in evaluating existing equipment and building systems along with recommending energy-efficient alternatives. In addition, HES is familiar with multiple rebates and incentive programs available.
Building Commissioning
HES’ Certified Commissioning Agents ensure that clients receive an unbiased, objective view of the building system’s installations, operation, and performance. In addition, HES’ commissioning process will ensure that the mechanical systems have been installed per the contract documents and operate within the energy-efficient performance guidelines set out in the Owners Project Requirements and the Basis of Design.
Greenhouse Gas (GHG)
HES performs evaluations of a facilities GHG profile. In that profile, HES reviews all equipment and processes of the facility and its occupants. Then, all sources of GHG are measured and calculated against a baseline year with recommendations on “greener” practices to reduce GHG emissions. HES looks at both direct and indirect emissions. Direct emissions are those created onsite, for example, running a boiler. Indirect GHG emissions are made elsewhere but on behalf of the facility, for example, the emissions produced when electricity is generated at a power plant and used at a facility.
Benchmarking
Benchmark today and save for tomorrow! HES can assist through benchmarking by identifying underperforming buildings to target efficiency improvements. As long as your building systems are running, repairing or replacing working systems may be wasteful. Benchmarking can reveal if your building uses much more energy than similar buildings — wasting energy and money. In addition, benchmarking can help identify best practices from efficient buildings. Benchmark to find out which buildings in your portfolio are the most efficient, and then work with the teams at those buildings to replicate energy-saving practices at underperforming facilities. In addition, HES will help set investment priorities. HES recommends using the built-in financial tool within the Energy Star Portfolio Manager to compare cost savings across buildings in your portfolio. This can help determine how to allocate capital and maximize financial returns in energy efficiency.
In addition, HES’ president is also a Home Energy Ratings System (HERS) Rater and a National Green Building Standard (NGBS) Verifier.
Business Consulting
In the modern world, businesses are held accountable more than ever for their social and environmental impact. But as people become more aware of this growing need to develop environmental, social, and governance (ESG) efforts in their business practices, many questions remain unanswered. Namely, “How do I maintain the value of my company while minimizing any negative impact it has on people and the planet?” Or even better, “How do I increase my company’s profits while actively benefiting the world at large?” The HES team brings years of collective experience consulting for a wide range of business operations. These range from strategic planning to competitive market research, to designing optimal solutions for synthesizing sustainability goals with growth and innovation. With previous work advising in both the public and private sectors, HES has the ability to help organizations reach the next level concerning profits and meaningful impact on the planet. Together, we can find solutions that work for you in the face of some of the biggest challenges the global community faces.
Training
Understanding the energy industry and technical components associated with reducing one’s carbon footprint is only half the battle. The other significant challenge that most utility providers and building owners face is spreading this information to those who need it most. HES is adeptly experienced in providing specialized training services to end-users of all backgrounds including utility partners, building owners and operators and residential and commercial contractors. HES associates have provided training for key stakeholders in large municipalities such as New York City and New Orleans. HES has experience in:
• Teaching homeowners and facility managers how to cut down on their energy spending.
• Instructing building operators on how to use newly commissioned equipment.
• Guiding key municipal decision-makers on the best practices for maximizing their budget and cutting their carbon output.
